2017 Chevrolet Silverado
New for 2017
For 2017, the Silverado gains two notable safety features: Teen Driver alert and low-speed forward autonomous emergency braking.
Still like a rock
The full-size truck segment is dominated by the Big Three U.S. automakers, but Chevy has one advantage over Ford and Chrysler. Its old “Like a Rock” slogan is probably the catchiest ad tagline that any of its competitors have used for a truck. Chevy may not use that tagline anymore, but the 2017 Silverado still lives up to it with impressive capability and toughness.
Performance
The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado can hold its own in the competitive full-size truck segment with a series of powerful yet efficient engines. It boasts a maximum 12,500-pound max trailering rating, which Chevy says is a segment best.
Base models get a 4.3-liter V6 that produces 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Rear-wheel drive versions get an EPA-rated 20 mpg combined (18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway), while four-wheel drive versions are rated at 19 mpg combined (17 mpg city, 22 mpg highway).*
The middle engine option is a 5.3-liter V8, which produces 355 hp and 383 lb-ft, and is available with either six-speed or eight-speed automatic transmissions. With rear-wheel drive, trucks with this engine are rated at 19 mpg combined (16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway) with the six-speed and 18 mpg combined (16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway) with the eight-speed. Four-wheel drive models get 18 mpg combined (16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway) with rear-wheel drive, and 17 mpg combined (15 mpg city, 20 mpg highway)* with four-wheel drive.
Chevy also offers the Silverado with the largest engine available in a General Motors truck—a 6.2-liter V8. Available exclusively with the eight-speed automatic, it produces 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. This engine gets an EPA-rated 17 mpg combined (15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway) with rear-wheel drive, and 17 mpg combined (15 mpg city, 20 mpg highway)* with four-wheel drive.
Features
The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado is a full-size pickup truck, meaning buyers have plenty of options when it comes to configurations and trim levels. Chevy offers regular cab, double cab, and crew cab body styles, along with three-bed sizes and five trim levels. Pricing starts at $27,585.**
Standard equipment on the base Silverado WT includes a Corner Step rear bumper, locking tailgates, audio system with 4.2-inch display screen, and 17-inch steel wheels. The LS model includes applicable standard features from the WT, plus features like outside heated power-adjustable mirrors, Chevrolet MyLink audio system with 7.0-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth®, power windows, and remote keyless entry.
The LT model builds on the WT and LS models, with added standard features like 17-inch aluminum wheels, body color exterior trim, EZ-Lift and Lower tailgate, 8.0-inch touchscreen display, SiriusXM® satellite radio, and leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls.
The LTZ adds an automatic locking rear differential, trailering package, 18-inch aluminum wheels, chrome exterior trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather seats, heated front seats, and a power-sliding rear window. The top High Country model adds even more standard features, including a spray-on bed liner, cargo tie-downs, navigation, Bose® audio system, and a heated steering wheel.
Design
The Silverado got a major styling refresh for 2016, so it enters 2017 essentially unchanged. Chevy previously altered the front end to give it a bolder, more chiseled appearance. The Silverado also features inlaid doors that fit into the body sides rather than wrapping over the roof, which provides a cleaner look and helps reduce wind noise.
The interior features plenty of storage space, including a center console (on models with front bucket seats) that can swallow nearly one cubic foot of stuff. It can conceal a laptop, or hold hanging files—a handy feature for the many owners who use their trucks as mobile offices. Helping with both work and play is the available MyLink infotainment system, which includes Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® compatibility.
Safety
Standard safety equipment on the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, Teen Driver monitoring, and six standard airbags. Optional features include a rearview camera, forward collision alert, Safety Alert Seat, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, front and rear park assist, and low-speed forward autonomous emergency braking.
Verdict
The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado is a tough yet smart full-size pickup truck.
