2022 GMC Canyon

Overview

Largely similar to the Chevrolet Colorado, the GMC Canyon offers a more feature-laden driving experience. For 2022, the GMC Canyon receives several exterior updates that give the truck a more refined and rugged look. In addition, GMC is introducing a more off-road-oriented AT4 model that appeals to the most adventurous of buyers and a more luxurious version of the Denali trim level. The AT4 has features like skid plate for underbody protection, electronic limited slip rear differential and unique masculine exterior styling that should appeal to younger buyers. If the AT4 isn't snazzy enough, upgrade to the Denali for the ultimate in luxury feature liked heated steering wheel and seats, upgraded leather seating surfaces and unique 20 inch wheels.

The Perfect Ride For...

A person that wants a do anything truck from hauling items around town to going off road, but doesn't need or want a humongous full size truck. When it comes to purchasing a 2022 GMC Canyon buyers have four trim levels to choose from - Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4 and Denali. All trims are available in either crew cab or extended cab variants. Opting for the Elevation or Elevation Standard trims gives buyers the option to upgrade to the High Elevation Package that provides black heated leather seats, heated steering wheel and power driver seat. If that isn't enough luxury, upgrading to the Denali rewards buyers with heated and ventilated seats, larger infotainment system, wireless smartphone charging stand, and a Bose premium audio system. The AT4, on the other hand, will appeal to buyers that want a more rugged and aggressive truck that can tackle any terrain in style and without issues.

Drive and Handling

The 2022 GMC Canyon is available with three engine options - two regular gas and one diesel. The entry level engine is a 2.5 liter engine while higher trim levels feature a V6 that emits more than 300 horsepower and is mated to GMC's smooth shifting 8 speed automatic transmission. One of the best features of the V6 engine is that it not only has the ability to deactivate cylinders depending on driving situations to help preserve fuel economy but also is one of the quickest accelerating trucks in its class. While the Diesel engine does offer notable advantages in the form of extra towing capacity and better fuel efficiency, the hefty price tag may offset those advantages. Regardless of which of the three engines are selected, ride quality is more than solid with the truck proving to be extremely capable whether it is traversing highways, city streets or dirt trails.

 Key Features

When it comes to features, the 2022 Canyon is certainly not lacking in what is proving to be a very competitive small truck segment. For off road enthusiasts that plan to take the Canyon off the beaten path will fall in love with the truck's standard StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control that intuitively detects between the path the Canyon is being steered by the driver and the direction the trick is actually moving. The system will then automatically use the brakes and throttle engine torque to ensure the Canyon is moving in the direction the driver intends. Upgrading to the Denali rewards the driver with a slew of driver assistance features like rear park assist, lane departure warning and teen driver technology that encourages safe driving by teens through muting the audio until all seatbelts are fastened and enabling specific safety controls.
