Behind the Scenes: A Look at Chevrolet Manufacturing
Who says you can’t have both quantity and quality? General Motors has mastered both with dozens of manufacturing plants across the nation producing thousands of the highest quality automobiles in the world every single day. The largest of these, the Arlington Assembly plant in Texas (pictured above), is the starting point for every Chevy Suburban and Tahoe that hits the road. Since the 1950s, this plant has produced some of the most storied names in automotive history: Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, and Chevrolet. It has been the proving ground for countless innovative technologies over the decades (it was even the company’s first fully air-conditioned manufacturing facility). Today, Arlington is one of 63 GM facilities recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency for achieving the Energy Star Challenge, reducing energy intensity by 10% within 5 years, equivalent to nearly 250,000 homes. It’s also one of several GM sites that has received billions of dollars of investment to create on-site wildlife preserves as part of the auto conglomerates efforts to balance energetic entrepreneurialism with environmental stewardship.
